SCR 1023 Summary

• Proclaims February 2-8, 2018 as Chicanx History Week in Arizona to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848.

• Recognizes the contributions of Mexican-American and Chicanx people to Arizona's and the nation's economy, development, arts, business, education, and society.

• Acknowledges historical injustices including loss of land and property, suppression of language and culture, and denial of employment, education, and political representation opportunities despite treaty promises of citizenship.

• Honors the Chicanx generation as a distinct group resulting from the confluence of indigenous, Mexican, and American histories, cultures, and traditions, particularly recognizing the Chicanx Movement of the 1960s-1970s.

• Extends recognition and tribute to Mexican-Americans and their descendants whose citizenship changed from Mexican to American under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
