SB 1044 Summary

• Superintendent of Public Instruction establishes a safe schools plan task force within the Department of Education to identify best practices and strategies for improving mental health supports in public schools.

• Task force must include students, administrators, counselors, licensed mental health professionals, law enforcement officers, and teachers.

• Task force shall explore advanced online youth emotional health and crisis response systems, develop recommended school safety plans with parent communication protocols and staff training, and identify community partnerships for student support services.

• Task force must submit a report to the Governor, legislative leadership, and education committee chairs by December 31, 2021, with findings and recommendations posted to the Department of Education website.

• Task force and this statute are repealed on December 31, 2024.
