SB 1283 Summary

• Arizona Department of Education shall identify best practices and recommendations for digital citizenship and media literacy instruction by November 15, 2019, and make resources available to school districts and charter schools on its website.

• Department shall establish a digital citizenship and media literacy advisory committee including superintendents, digital citizenship experts, media literacy experts, librarians, parents, teachers, and administrators to develop best practices and provide recommendations.

• Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, school districts and charter schools must annually review and consider revising policies and procedures on digital citizenship and media literacy in consultation with parents, teachers, librarians, and community experts.

• Defines "digital citizenship" as skills related to current technology and social media including norms of appropriate, responsible and healthy behavior.

• Defines "media literacy" as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and use media, including foundational skills that lead to digital citizenship.
