HB 2143 Summary

• Prohibits Arizona postsecondary institutions from preventing student athletes from earning compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness (NIL).

• Bars athletic associations, conferences, and national collegiate athletic organizations from preventing student athletes from earning NIL compensation or from sanctioning institutions whose athletes receive such compensation.

• Prohibits institutions and athletic organizations from providing prospective student athletes with NIL compensation and requires student athletes to obtain professional representation only from state-licensed individuals.

• Requires student athletes to disclose NIL contracts to their institution and prohibits team contracts from restricting athletes' use of their name, image, or likeness outside official team activities for contracts entered into on or after September 1, 2021.

• Becomes effective December 31, 2022, and applies to Arizona universities, community colleges, and private colleges and universities.
