HB 2230 Summary

• Amends Arizona Revised Statutes section 22-301 to clarify justice court jurisdiction over misdemeanors and criminal offenses punishable by fines not exceeding $2,500 or jail time not exceeding six months.

• Specifies that penalties, assessments, restitution, time payment fees, and incarceration costs are not considered part of the fine when determining justice court jurisdiction.

• In counties with populations exceeding two million persons, grants justice of the peace original jurisdiction over misdemeanor offenses occurring within their precinct, unless the offense is filed in municipal court or consolidated with a felony.

• Allows transfer of uniform traffic tickets filed in the incorrect precinct to the correct precinct if both precincts are in the same county and located on the boundary where the offense occurred.

• Takes effect December 31, 2020.
