HB 2554 Summary

• Removes the prohibition on state environmental standards being more stringent than federal standards by striking section 49-104(A)(16).

• Requires the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality director to establish drinking water aquifer water quality standards for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), chromium-6, 1,4-dioxane, and other perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances detected in public water systems.

• Mandates the department annually review peer-reviewed science and government studies related to these pollutants and undertake additional rulemaking if necessary to remain current with scientific developments.

• Requires the department to consider standards adopted in other states and review federal health agency guidance when developing the new drinking water standards.

• Directs standards be protective of vulnerable populations including pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants, and children.
