HB 2559 Summary

• Increases Arizona Criminal Justice Commission membership from 14 to 17 governor-appointed members, with no more than 9 from the same political party.

• Requires appointed members to include representatives from law enforcement (police chiefs, county attorneys, sheriffs), courts (former judge, mayor, county supervisor), and a chief probation officer across three population-based county categories.

• Adds three new member categories: a person leading an indigent defense agency, a person leading a private nonprofit juvenile justice organization, and a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist with criminal justice system experience.

• Sets initial terms for the three new seats to end January 11, 2021 (one member) and January 10, 2022 (two members), with future terms of two years.

• Maintains existing membership structure including attorney general, director of public safety, director of corrections, administrative director of courts, and chairman of board of executive clemency.
