SB 1236 Summary

• Expands adult adoption eligibility to include current or previous stepchildren of the adopting person.

• Allows foster parents to adopt adults who were placed in their care as juveniles if a continuous familial relationship has been maintained for 5 or more years.

• Permits adoption of adult nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren without requiring consent from natural parents or the Division.

• Requires both adopting party and adoptee to appear in person at court hearing unless represented by attorney with written authorization.

• Declared an emergency measure effective immediately upon approval.
