HB 2201 Summary

• Removes paragraph 16 from section 49-104(A) requiring state environmental laws and rules to be no more stringent than corresponding federal law.

• Requires the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality director to establish drinking water aquifer water quality standards for five specific pollutants: perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid, chromium-6, 1,4-dioxane, and other perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances detected in public water systems.

• Mandates the department review standards from other states, peer-reviewed science, and federal health agency studies when developing the new aquifer water quality standards, with annual reviews of latest science required.

• Requires standards be protective of public health including vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants, and children.

• Makes minor grammatical corrections throughout the statute, including changing "rule making" to "rulemaking" and "Utilize" to "Use" in various sections.
