SB 1653 Summary

• Establishes a joint study committee on county boundaries consisting of 13 members: three House members, three Senate members, four public members knowledgeable about county boundaries and fiscal issues, and one member appointed by the governor.

• Committee shall research and report on fiscal and related impacts of changing the county boundary between Apache and Navajo counties to create a new Sitgreaves county.

• Committee shall commission a land survey to determine the possible metes and bounds of the proposed new Sitgreaves county.

• Committee must submit findings and recommendations to the governor, president of the senate, speaker of the house, and secretary of state by June 30, 2022.

• Appropriates $500,000 from the state general fund in fiscal year 2021-2022 for the land survey, with the committee section repealing September 30, 2023.
