AZ HCR2027

Increases criminal penalties for assault on first responders by classifying certain aggravated assaults on first responders as higher-level felonies, including class 2 or 3 felonies depending on the type of injury caused.

Establishes a $250,000 state death benefit payable to the surviving spouse (or divided equally among children if no spouse) of any first responder killed in the line of duty as a result of another person's criminal act, payable within 30 days of employer notification.

Defines "first responder" to include peace officers, firefighters, fire investigators, fire inspectors, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, Arizona National Guard members on state active duty, and correctional officers employed by the state department of corrections.

Creates a state supplemental benefit fund supported by a new 2% surcharge on court fines and penalties (effective through December 31, 2031) to fund the death benefit payments.

Requires the measure to be submitted to Arizona voters at the next general election for approval before becoming law.
