House Bill 2055 Summary

• Allows probation officers and courts to permit remote reporting for probationers, with consideration given to work schedules, family obligations, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, transportation availability, and medical care requirements.

• Creates a new "work time credit" equal to 30 days of probation reduction for every 30 days a probationer is engaged in eligible employment (minimum 130 wage-earning hours in 30 days) while meeting case plan goals, restitution payments, and community service obligations.

• Defines "eligible employment" as any occupation with supporting documentation and "supporting documentation" as employment records, pay stubs, employment letters, contracts, or other reliable verification methods.

• Makes work time credits subject to revocation if the probationer violates probation conditions, and excludes probationers on lifetime probation, Class 2-3 felony probation, misdemeanor-only probation, or those required to register as sex offenders.

• Effective December 31, 2023; formally titled the "Earning Safe Reentry Through Work Act of 2023."
