School districts and charter schools must provide parents with a school counseling consent form at the beginning of each school year allowing parents to prohibit school counselors from discussing specific topics with their child.

School counselors cannot be prohibited from discussing matters they are required to report under section 13-3620 (child abuse/neglect reporting) or student safety concerns.

School counseling program proposals must include policies on providing parents with school counseling consent forms as part of the school safety program requirements.

Amendments to section 15-843 clarify that pupil disciplinary interventions must include discussion with the parent or guardian and consultation with a school counselor or other mental health professional if available.
