SB 1343 Summary

• Department of Education shall identify best practices and recommendations for digital citizenship and media literacy instruction, with a deadline of January 15, 2024, and publish resources and professional development materials on its website.

• Establishes a digital citizenship and media literacy advisory committee within the Department of Education with membership including superintendents, experts, librarians, parents, teachers, and administrators to recommend academic standard revisions, technology plans, and implementation strategies.

• School districts and charter schools must annually review and amend their digital citizenship and media literacy policies beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, consulting with parents, teachers, students, and community experts.

• Defines "digital citizenship" as skills related to technology and social media including norms of appropriate and responsible behavior, and "media literacy" as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and use media.
