SB 1440 Summary

• Removes the requirement that Arizona environmental laws and regulations be no more stringent than corresponding federal law (repeals A.R.S. § 49-104(A)(16)).

• Requires the director to establish drinking water aquifer quality standards for five specific pollutants: perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid, chromium-6, 1,4-dioxane, and other perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances detected in public water systems.

• Mandates the director annually review peer-reviewed science and government studies regarding the required pollutants and undertake additional rulemaking if necessary to ensure standards remain protective of public health, including vulnerable populations.

• Requires review of standards and maximum contaminant levels adopted by other states, with consideration for adopting standards for pollutants where two or more states have established standards or guidance.

• Makes minor technical and grammatical corrections throughout the statute.
