Pharmacists may independently order and conduct testing for influenza, respiratory infections, and conditions related to public health threats identified by the Department of Health Services.

Pharmacists may initiate and perform treatment for eligible persons who test positive for these conditions, using evidence-based clinical guidelines from the CDC or Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Testing must be conducted at a pharmacy or facility with a Certificate of Waiver from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments.

Eligible patients must meet inclusion/exclusion criteria and explicit medical referral criteria specified in current clinical guidelines or evidence-based research.

Patients ineligible for pharmacist treatment or who do not respond to initial treatment must be referred to their primary care provider.
