Student journalists retain freedom of speech and press rights in school-sponsored media regardless of financial support or school facility use.

Student media supervisors determine content of school-sponsored media, though advisers may teach professional journalism and English standards.

Schools may restrict content only if it is libelous, slanderous, invades privacy, violates law, or materially disrupts school operations; schools bear burden of justifying any prior restraint.

Student journalists cannot be disciplined and media advisers cannot be retaliated against for conduct protected by this section or the state and federal constitutions.

School districts and charter schools must adopt written policies with content standards consistent with these protections and including a student journalist code of ethics covering responsible, fair, and accurate coverage.
