School districts may demolish unsound school buildings using district funds without prior approval from the division of school facilities, subject to notice and evidence requirements.

School districts must submit notice to the division and provide evidence that the building has outlived its useful life, is condemned or structurally unsafe, and that demolition will not reduce pupil square footage or cause the district to fall below minimum facility adequacy standards.

The division has 90 days to object to the proposed demolition; if no objection is filed by day 91, the division must update its facility database and remove the building's square footage from the district's computations.

If the division objects, the school district must obtain written approval from the school facilities oversight board before proceeding with demolition.

All demolition notices must be submitted by December 31, 2026, and this section expires December 31, 2027.
