SB1286 Summary

• Schools operated by school districts shall close on regular primary and general election days, with teachers and staff receiving in-service training and full compensation without using personal leave time.

• Voting centers may be established in addition to specifically designated polling places, allowing any county voter to receive the appropriate ballot after presenting identification on election day.

• Public schools in grades 8-12 with gymnasiums must provide sufficient space for use as polling places when requested by the officer in charge of elections, and are exempt from state and local requirements that would prevent such use.

• Beginning in 2026, the department of administration shall coordinate with state agencies and counties to provide available state-owned facilities for use as voting locations when requested.

• Election boards for voting centers and other voting locations shall be appointed not less than twenty days before general or primary elections, with the same party balance requirements as traditional polling places.
