SB1406 Summary

• Allows the Arizona Medical Board and Board of Osteopathic Examiners to grant provisional licenses to international medical licensees who have a job offer at a health care provider in counties with populations under one million persons.

• Provisional licensees must work under the supervision of a licensed physician, comply with continuing education requirements, and have valid immigration status to work as a physician in the United States.

• Provisional licenses are renewed annually and automatically convert to full licenses after four years if the licensee practices in an eligible county, remains disciplined-free, and receives a signed attestation from their supervising physician.

• Employers must notify the board within five days if a provisional licensee is terminated or leaves employment; failure to secure new employment in an eligible county results in license termination.

• Applicable to physicians licensed within the preceding five years in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or other countries added by the board, and who have practiced medicine for at least five years after completing postgraduate training.
