SB1535 Summary

• Allows school districts and charter schools to adopt policies for students with diabetes to self-manage their condition in classrooms, on school grounds, and at school-sponsored activities under authorization from a licensed health professional.

• Permits schools to designate voluntary diabetes care assistants to administer insulin, assist with insulin self-administration, and administer glucagon in emergency situations if a school nurse or licensed health professional is not immediately available.

• Allows school districts and charter schools to obtain glucagon through standing orders from physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or the department of health services to stock at school sites for emergency use.

• Permits trained school employees and other licensed health professionals to administer glucagon in good faith to any student exhibiting symptoms of hypoglycemia at school or school-sponsored activities, regardless of diabetes diagnosis status.

• Provides civil immunity from liability for school districts, charter schools, employees, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and volunteer health professionals for good faith adoption and implementation of these diabetes management policies and glucagon administration procedures.
