Law enforcement may only issue citations for motorcycle helmet violations to operators or passengers aged 16 or 17 who possess a valid driver license or permit.

Operators aged 18 or older may be cited if a passenger under 18 is not wearing a required protective helmet, or if an under-18 operator or passenger in their group is not wearing a helmet.

Initial violations by persons aged 16 or 17 are subject to a $100 civil penalty or community service instead of criminal citation.

Protective helmet requirements remain in effect for all motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, and motor driven cycle operators and passengers under 18 years of age.

Exemptions from helmet requirements apply to enclosed cab vehicles, farm/agricultural vehicles in active use, certain all-terrain vehicles, and vehicles operated on private property.
