Beginning August 1, 2026, all Arizona public schools serving grades 9-12 that sponsor athletic teams or programs must provide at least one automated external defibrillator (AED) in an unlocked, clearly marked location accessible during school hours and at athletic events.

AEDs must be retrievable and usable within three minutes, located in close proximity to athletic venues, and maintained in good working order according to manufacturer guidelines and nationally recognized cardiovascular care standards.

All coaches at schools must complete training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, and AED use following nationally recognized emergency cardiovascular care guidelines.

$500,000 is appropriated from the state general fund in fiscal year 2025-2026 to the Department of Education for schools with total ending cash balances of $5,000,000 or less to purchase AEDs, CPR training kits, and provide required coach training.

Schools may accept gifts, grants, and donations to purchase and maintain AEDs and provide required training to employees; the appropriation is exempt from lapsing until June 30, 2027.
