SB1226 Summary

• Requires school district governing boards to develop and adopt a public policy limiting students' use of wireless communications devices (including gaming devices and video players) during instructional time.

• Policy may include requirements for secure device storage during instructional time, conditions for device retrieval, and procedures for parent-student communication during class.

• Policy must allow exceptions for students who are volunteer firefighters/rescue squad members, have medical conditions, have devices required by individualized education programs, are English language learners using translators, or have teacher permission for educational purposes.

• Schools must provide copies of the policy to parents, teachers, and students at the beginning of each school year and notify them of any policy changes.

• School districts with existing wireless device limitation policies on the effective date are not required to develop new policies.
