Constables who are elected or appointed by the board of supervisors must obtain certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Board to have peace officer authority, removing the previous limitation that restricted authority to only official duties.

The AZPOST Board gains new responsibilities for constables including approving basic training curriculum, establishing minimum standards (such as high school graduation), conducting background investigations, issuing completion certificates, and establishing continuing training requirements.

Newly elected constables must complete mandatory training approved by AZPOST within six months of election and complete any additional training required by AZPOST in subsequent years, replacing the previous requirement of 16 hours annually.

Deputy constables must be certified pursuant to AZPOST requirements before appointment by constables with board of supervisors consent.

The constable ethics standards and training board retains authority over ethical conduct complaints, disciplinary actions, and may approve additional training courses beyond AZPOST requirements.
