AB 1596 Summary

• Extends hearing timelines for civil harassment and workplace violence restraining orders from 15/21 days to 21/25 days from when temporary orders are granted or denied

• Allows courts to transmit protective orders directly to the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) or through law enforcement agencies, rather than requiring petitioner delivery

• Expands civil harassment order protections to include named family or household members without requiring them to reside with the petitioner

• Makes possession or receipt of ammunition while subject to a protective order a felony offense, in addition to existing firearm prohibitions

• Permits elder or dependent adult abuse actions to be brought on behalf of protected persons by conservators, trustees with power of attorney authority, guardians ad litem, or other legally authorized representatives
