Department of Motor Vehicles must accept certificates from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as an alternative to medical professional certificates when disabled veterans apply for distinguishing placards used for parking purposes.

Disabled veterans can now use distinguishing placards suspended from rearview mirror, displayed on dashboard, or inserted in manufacturer-installed clips on the driver's side front window.

Department must advise placard applicants in writing about procedures to apply for special license plates and available fee exemptions under the Revenue and Taxation Code.

Placards expire June 30 every two years with contrasting color changed annually to aid law enforcement identification of qualified vehicles.
