SB 1043 Summary

• Prohibits any person from holding themselves out as or using the title "personal trainer" unless they meet specific educational or certification requirements.

• Requires personal trainers to have either a bachelor's degree in exercise science, kinesiology, fitness science, or a closely related field, OR certification from a national organization approved by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or U.S. Department of Education.

• Defines "personal trainer" as an individual who develops and implements physical fitness programs and provides services through direct financial relationship with clients or through a compensated organization.

• Excludes specialists who provide training in only one discipline (such as yoga, pilates, or specific equipment) without advising on broader fitness aspects like body weight management, cardiovascular fitness, or strength development.

• Applies to any representation, advertisement, sign, card, or media claiming personal trainer status.
