SB 1126 Summary

• Requires Academic Senates of California Community Colleges and California State University, and requests University of California's Academic Senate, to review 8 lower division common core courses in child development or early education to improve early childhood educator program articulation and transfer pathways

• Mandates senates consider and make findings on: aligning CSU and UC courses with advanced early educator competencies; transferability of coursework between systems; and feasibility of attaining baccalaureate degrees in child development or related majors through community college collaboration

• Requires chairs of California Community Colleges and California State University Academic Senates to report findings, recommendations, and suggested statutory changes to the Legislature and Legislative Analyst's Office by December 1, 2011; UC Senate chair's participation is requested

• Directs California State University to deem community college students who complete all 8 common core courses and general education requirements as having fulfilled lower division coursework, with no additional unit requirements beyond other enrolled students; requests same from University of California

• Makes this requirement inoperative upon implementation of the Academic Senates' recommendations and makes the reporting requirement inoperative on January 1, 2015
