Beginning July 1, 2011, manufacturers of compostable plastic bags must make them "readily and easily identifiable" from other plastic bags in compliance with Federal Trade Commission Environmental Marketing Claims Guides.

Compostable plastic bags must be labeled with a third-party certification logo indicating ASTM D6400 standard compliance and either display uniform green coloring with "compostable" label at least one inch high, or "compostable" text on both sides in green lettering or within a green contrasting band.

Compostable plastic bags smaller than 14 by 14 inches must have proportionally-sized lettering and stripes relative to bag size.

Compostable plastic bags sold or distributed in California are prohibited from displaying chasing arrow resin identification codes or recycling symbols in any form.

Manufacturers must comply with labeling requirements only to the extent they do not conflict with Federal Trade Commission Environmental Marketing Claims Guides.
