AB 1445 Summary

• Extends a pilot program assisting indigent inmates with reentry services until January 1, 2015, and adds Marin, Napa, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties to the program.

• Allows sheriffs or county jail officers in participating counties to spend inmate welfare fund money to help inmates with reentry within 30 days after release, including work placement, counseling, identification, education, and housing assistance.

• Prohibits using inmate welfare funds for services that sheriffs or counties are already required to provide, and requires funds to supplement rather than replace existing services.

• Requires participating counties to report annually to the board of supervisors on reentry program spending, number of inmates served, types of assistance provided, and average program duration per inmate.
