AB 2493 Summary

• Authorizes the Administrative Director of the Division of Workers' Compensation to establish and maintain a separate list of certified administrative hearing interpreters for workers' compensation proceedings, in addition to the existing State Personnel Board list.

• Requires interpreters on the Division of Workers' Compensation list to be tested and certified by an independent organization designated by the administrative director, meeting minimum standards in interpreting skills and linguistic abilities.

• Mandates that the independent testing organization have no financial interest in interpreter training or employment to ensure impartiality.

• Allows the administrative director to collect a reasonable fee from interpreters seeking certification, not to exceed the actual regulatory costs of administering the testing, certification, and publication of the certified interpreter list.

• Extends the same certification authority to medical examination interpreters used in workers' compensation proceedings and medical examinations under Labor Code Division 4.
