AB 401 Summary

• Amends Education Code Section 32228 to remove a provision that excluded pedophilia from the definition of sexual orientation in school safety and bias prevention programs
• Reaffirms legislative intent that public schools serving grades 8-12 have access to supplemental resources for school safety and violence prevention programs
• Requires schools receiving funding under this article to teach conflict resolution without violence, train staff in mediation techniques, reduce violence incidents, and provide age-appropriate instruction in domestic violence and dating violence prevention
• Establishes that schools must combat bias based on race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation
• Contains conditional operative language allowing integration with Assembly Bill 1999 if both bills are enacted by January 1, 2013
