AB 804 Summary

• Expands the family temporary disability insurance program (renamed "Paid Family Leave") to include care for grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and parents-in-law, in addition to existing categories of children, spouses, parents, and domestic partners.

• Maintains the existing benefit structure of up to six weeks of wage replacement benefits within any 12-month period, with a maximum benefit equal to six times the individual's weekly benefit amount.

• Adds definitions for new family members including "grandparent," "grandchild," "sibling," and "parent-in-law" to clarify eligibility for covered relatives.

• Makes conforming and clarifying changes to medical certification requirements for employees taking family care leave.

• Becomes operative on July 1, 2012, and appropriates funds from the Unemployment Compensation Disability Fund to support the expanded program.
