SB 537 Summary

• Authorizes establishment of California Cadet Corps at colleges, community colleges, and schools without existing J.R.O.T.C. or R.O.T.C. programs, with Adjutant General and school governing body approval.

• Allows Adjutant General to appoint officers, warrant officers, and noncommissioned officers to California Cadet Corps with pay and expenses disbursed by the school or college employing them.

• Expands workers' compensation coverage and increases presumed minimum yearly earnings for eligible cadet instructors and officers from $2,500 to $10,000.

• Permits California Cadet Corps members to use California National Guard rifle ranges and facilities for training, and requires unit inspections at least once every two years (annually if previously rated unsatisfactory).

• Allows Adjutant General to establish military academies or alternative education programs through cooperative agreements with school districts or county offices of education.
