AB 1443 Summary

• Extends California Fair Employment and Housing Act protections to unpaid interns and volunteers, prohibiting discrimination in selection, termination, training, and other terms of treatment based on race, color, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, and other protected characteristics

• Prohibits harassment of unpaid interns and volunteers on account of protected characteristics, with employers required to take immediate and appropriate corrective action when harassment occurs

• Applies anti-discrimination protections to unpaid internships and limited duration programs providing unpaid work experience

• Extends religious accommodation requirements to unpaid internships and programs providing unpaid workplace experience
