AB 1535 Summary

• Authorizes pharmacists to furnish naloxone hydrochloride according to standardized procedures or protocols approved by the California State Board of Pharmacy and Medical Board of California, in consultation with the California Society of Addiction Medicine and California Pharmacists Association.

• Requires standardized procedures to include education on opioid overdose prevention, recognition, response, naloxone administration, side effects, and emergency medical care, as well as information about drug treatment programs.

• Mandates pharmacists provide consultation to patients and notify their primary care providers (with patient consent) of any drugs or devices furnished.

• Requires pharmacists to complete at least one hour of approved continuing education on naloxone use prior to furnishing the drug.

• Authorizes the State Board of Pharmacy to adopt emergency regulations to establish procedures, which remain in effect for 180 days or until permanent regulations take effect.
