AB 1539 Summary

• Requires the Instructional Quality Commission to consider developing and recommending computer science content standards for kindergarten through grade 12 by July 31, 2019, based on recommendations from computer science experts.

• Directs the Instructional Quality Commission to review existing computer science content standards, including national K-12 standards developed by the Computer Science Teachers Association, with standards potentially including coding instruction.

• Requires the Superintendent of Public Instruction to consider convening an expert group that includes teachers, principals, administrators, university professors, and private sector representatives, with at least half being computer science teachers.

• Makes the resulting computer science content standards optional for school districts to use in developing programs and course assessments, not mandatory.

• Provisions are contingent on appropriations being made in the annual Budget Act or another statute.
