AB 199 Summary

• Requires state-owned and state-run institutions (except public universities, public schools, and school districts) to purchase California-grown agricultural products when price, availability, and delivery schedules are equal to or better than out-of-state products, effective until January 1, 2017.

• Encourages public universities, public schools, and school districts to purchase California-grown agricultural products to the greatest extent possible, with no mandatory requirement.

• Applies only to contracts below the World Trade Organization Agreement on Government Procurement threshold for supplies and services.

• Removes agricultural products from existing state purchasing preferences until January 1, 2017, after which produce returns to the definition of "supplies" subject to California preference requirements.

• Sunsets on January 1, 2017, unless extended by later statute enacted before that date.
