AB 2213 Summary

• Allows out-of-state marriage and family therapist applicants to remediate up to 12 semester or 18 quarter units of coursework through continuing education or while registered as an intern, and reduces degree requirements from 60 to 48 semester units (or 90 to 72 quarter units) for applicants who began degrees before August 1, 2012.

• Permits out-of-state marriage and family therapist applicants licensed for at least two years to be exempt from practicum requirements; those licensed less than two years must complete 150 hours of face-to-face counseling and 75 hours of additional counseling or advocacy.

• Establishes parallel pathways for professional clinical counselor applicants, allowing remediation of up to 12 semester or 18 quarter units while registered as an intern and reducing degree requirements from 60 to 48 semester units (or 90 to 72 quarter units) for pre-August 1, 2012 degree holders.

• Requires all applicants to complete coursework in California law and ethics, mental health recovery-oriented care (3 semester units or 45 hours), cultural competency (1 semester unit or 15 hours), and substance abuse and addiction training (30 contact hours combined).

• Applies to applicants seeking licensure on or after January 1, 2016, with provisions for integrating amendments from SB 1466 if both bills are enacted before January 1, 2015.
