Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery shall develop and fund up to three local battery recycling pilot projects to collect data on implementation and outcomes related to diverting batteries from landfills.

Each pilot project must provide data to the department regarding how the projects impact battery diversion from waste streams ending up in landfills.

Department must review and compile pilot project information within six months after projects are complete and make the information available to local governments and enforcement agencies.

Department shall use pilot project results to develop informational guidelines to assist local governments that choose to include battery recycling in their solid waste diversion programs.

$1,500,000 is appropriated from the Integrated Waste Management Account to the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery to develop and fund the battery recycling pilot projects.
