SB 1000 Summary

• Establishes the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Safety Warning Act requiring warning labels on sugar-sweetened beverages (those with added calories and 75+ calories per 12 fluid ounces) sold in California.

• Mandates the warning "STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay" on sealed beverage containers, multipacks, and concentrate packaging with specific font and size requirements.

• Requires warning signs at vending machines, beverage dispensing machines, and point-of-purchase locations for unsealed beverages sold by employees.

• Establishes civil penalties of $50-$500 per violation (enforced starting July 1, 2015) with revenues deposited into the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Safety Warning Fund for allocation to local enforcement agencies.

• Exempts beverages containing 100% natural fruit or vegetable juice, infant formula, dietary aids for medical use, and milk-based beverages from the warning requirements.
