CA SB505

Requires all law enforcement agencies to develop, adopt, and implement written policies and standard protocols for conducting welfare checks when there is concern a person may be a danger to themselves or others.

Mandates that policies encourage peace officers to search the Department of Justice Automated Firearms System via the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System prior to conducting a welfare check to determine if the person is a registered firearm owner, whenever possible and reasonable.

Defines "reasonable" as circumstances where the firearm registry check can be conducted without undue burden on the officer's other duties, no exigent circumstances exist requiring immediate attention, and the officer has access to relevant identifying information.

Establishes that if the Commission on State Mandates determines the bill creates state-mandated costs, reimbursement to local agencies and school districts shall be made pursuant to Government Code Part 7.
