SB 923 Summary

• Establishes the Educational Apprenticeship Innovation Prize (EdPrize), a competitive grant program to fund apprenticeships, preapprenticeships, and career pathways in school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and community college campuses.

• Requires EdPrize applicants to use the California Career Pathways Trust application and provides special consideration for those applicants to also receive Career Pathways Trust grants.

• Sets minimum evaluation criteria for EdPrize applications including ability to provide two years of workforce training to grades 11-12 students, placement in apprenticeships in economically important fields, collaboration with businesses and workforce boards, and creation of written agreements between schools, students, and employers.

• Defines "eligible high school pupils" as grades 11-12 students who have passed or are exempt from the high school exit examination and are meeting academic requirements.

• Declares legislative intent that educational apprenticeships be considered as a career technical education option in school districts beyond those participating in the EdPrize program.
