Law enforcement agency heads (police chiefs, county sheriffs, or equivalent) must assess their jurisdiction to determine if any Indian tribal lands are located within it.

If Indian tribal lands exist within the jurisdiction, the agency head must ensure that peace officers who work in, adjacent to, or may respond to calls on or near those lands complete a training course covering Public Law 280 (federal law governing state criminal jurisdiction in Indian country).

The course requirement applies to peace officers employed by the agency who have potential responsibility for Indian tribal lands or adjacent areas.

If the Commission on State Mandates determines the bill creates state-mandated costs for local agencies, reimbursement shall be made pursuant to Government Code Part 7.
