AB 1785 Summary

• Prohibits driving while holding and operating a handheld wireless telephone or electronic wireless communications device, unless the device is specifically designed for voice-operated and hands-free operation and used in that manner.

• Allows hand-operated use of such devices only if the device is mounted on the windshield like a GPS unit or affixed to the dashboard/center console without obstructing the driver's view, and operated by a single swipe or tap of the finger.

• Exempts manufacturer-installed vehicle systems from the prohibition.

• Establishes infraction penalties of $20 for the first offense and $50 for each subsequent offense.

• Exempts emergency services professionals using electronic wireless communications devices while operating authorized emergency vehicles in the course of their duties.
