AB 1980 Summary

• Authorizes the California Fire Foundation to prepare a plan for modifications to the existing California firefighters memorial at the State Capitol, including a new wall for additional fallen firefighter names.

• Requires the Department of General Services to review designs for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, California Environmental Quality Act, safety regulations, and building standards, and to conduct construction inspections.

• Mandates the California Fire Foundation to establish a design and construction schedule, solicit designs, select a design, and report to the Joint Committee on Rules for review and approval of the modifications.

• Prohibits construction from commencing until the State Capitol Park master plan is approved by the Joint Committee on Rules or January 1, 2021, whichever occurs first, and requires verification of sufficient private donations before any construction begins.

• Requires all memorial modifications to be funded exclusively through private donations secured by the California Fire Foundation, with no state funds authorized for the project.
