AB 1993 Summary

• Requires electronic communication service providers subject to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act to maintain a law enforcement contact process with specific mechanisms for contact, continual availability, and status updates.

• Mandates service providers file a statement with the Attorney General by July 1, 2017 describing their law enforcement contact process, and file updated statements for any material changes as soon as practicable.

• Requires the Attorney General to consolidate all filed statements into a single record and regularly make it available to local law enforcement agencies.

• Makes all filed statements confidential and exempt from disclosure under the California Public Records Act and other state laws.

• Establishes that the exclusive remedy for violations is an injunctive action by the Attorney General, without limiting other remedies available under state or federal law.
