AB 2329 Summary

• Requires the Superintendent of Public Instruction to convene a 23-member computer science strategic implementation advisory panel by September 1, 2017, composed of teachers, administrators, university faculty, industry representatives, and student and parent representatives.

• Mandates the advisory panel submit recommendations for a computer science strategic implementation plan to the State Department of Education, State Board of Education, and Legislature by July 1, 2018, addressing teacher recruitment and training, curriculum standards, and equitable access to computer science courses.

• Requires the State Department of Education to develop and the State Board of Education to adopt a computer science strategic implementation plan by January 1, 2019, and submit it to the Legislature.

• Authorizes the advisory panel to seek grants and donations from public or private sources if state and federal funding is insufficient for implementing the plan.

• Repeals all provisions on January 1, 2021, unless extended by later legislation.
