AB 2579 Summary

• Requires the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery to include food service packaging information in its next regularly scheduled waste characterization study conducted on or after January 1, 2017.

• Study must document the amount of food service packaging by material type used in California, including percentages recycled, composted, disposed, and estimated percentage littered.

• Study must identify facilities accepting food service packaging for recycling or composting, the cities they serve, and infrastructure needed to reach California's 75 percent statewide recycling goal and reduce litter.

• Study must analyze current and potential markets for recycled and composted food service packaging products and identify barriers to increased recycling and composting with potential solutions.

• Defines "food service packaging" as single-use packaging products used by food service providers for customers' onsite-prepared food.
